The data illustration resembles Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. It is inspired by various story elements: two sides of the brain and a mirrored reality; an elevator shaft between them with a consciousness at either end.

The color, Laelia Pink, resembles the girl in pink and the color of a brain. Did Murakami come up with a chubby girl in pink because the story focuses on the brain? As an intuitive writer, that character might have been a sign of things to come.
